about

Hugh McCormick is a multi-disciplinary graphic designer, creative director, and founder of the Hugh McCormick Design Company (just to beat the hell out of the obvious). He specializes in brand identity systems, packaging, apparel, murals and spacial design.

Born and raised in Baltimore, McCormick moved to Maine to cut his teeth taking on freelance design work while earning a BFA from the Maine College of Art & Design. In 2016, he moved into his first studio in downtown Portland where he became a staple in the Portland creative community; designing branding, various packaging, murals and pieces of apparel for clients of all shapes and sizes.

McCormick is known for his ambitious and oft-times relentless work ethic and attention to detail. What began with foundations in simple branding and packaging work for Maine’s emerging craft beer and cannabis industries has evolved into creating immersive brand experiences. From spacial design to innovative creative direction, he now provides unflinching work for brands across the country and internationally, consistently followed by national recognition.

McCormick continues to branch out to other inspiration-driven clients who seek to create brands full of detail oriented consideration backed by compelling reasoning.

Testimonials

Hugh is fiercely talented. I’m able to give guidelines on what I am looking for and he hits it right on the head. It’s an incredible thing to be able to do that—tell someone what you’re looking for and have them get it so completely. Working with Hugh has made my brand cohesive, from the way the barbers look to the logo to the sign to the business cards to the feel of the shop. He has pulled all of the pieces together and made it uniform and comprehensive. He’s also larger than life, and has great passion for what he does. There is incredible value in what Hugh brings to the table.

- Ed Beckett // Owner // Main Street Barber Shop

Working with HMDC was an experience to be certain. I feel like our overall project was relatively small (I wanted to work with him to create a secondary sub-brand for Bissell Brothers' second location in Milo) and I wanted to come up with a way to stylishly showcase the town's namesake 3 rivers in the design. Hugh totally immersed himself in the project, live-proofing numerous concepts and versions, making it super easy for me to find the right direction for the company. Hugh is a digital design professional, meaning that work moves fast and you can see each step of the process- he handles files extremely well and is very responsive to email and text. We also worked with Hugh on-site to paint several instances of his design; he brings immense energy and enthusiasm to everything he's a part of, and our experience was no different. I was honored that we were chosen to be part of his web series.I recommend HMDC for anyone seeking in-depth design services with a very enthusiastic professional.

- Peter Jensen Bissell // Owner // Bissell Brothers // Highroller Lobster Company

Hugh's design is very much like his personality, fun, energetic, innovative and spontaneous. Being able to create a brand that not only speaks to your product but also the personalities of the people behind it pushes the identity to a personal and character driven level. Also, I want to work with people I like and who are as excited about my brand as I am, that's Hugh in a nutshell.

- Nicole Wolf // Photographer

I knew that getting branding right is extremely important, and that’s why we chose to work with Hugh. He is focused on making things look good, and creating cohesion across every design element. Working with Hugh was super easy; we are very satisfied. I gave him some general guidelines around what we wanted, and he ran with it. People have responded overwhelmingly to the brand he’s developed. It was an easy process, the product is great, and I’d 100% work with him again.

- Nikki Carr Flannery / Owner // Hippie Cow Beef // CF Cattle Co

If you’re building a brand, the bullet points are the bricks. That’s the easy part. Your story—the part that moves people—is the mortar. Hugh understands that inspiration comes from your story, and you find a story by connecting and by listening. Hugh understands all of this. It is his superpower. Hugh starts your project as a fan. He connects with you, your company and your work on a human level. He connects with your story. He gets inspired and figure out how to bring that inspiration to other people.

-Barry Privett // Lead Singer/Manager // Carbon Leaf (band)

Hugh’s design talents are amazing. He can develop a look and brand from scratch based on your personality and input even if you are not yourself creative. With very little direction from us he knocked it out of the park. It is exactly what we were looking for without our knowing it. Creating a brand is a pretty tall order. It’s how people connect with you and your company. What Hugh has created captures the sense of place and our company’s culture. We are grateful.

- Jason Gass // Co-Founder/Owner // Yaya Brewing Company

Hugh was great. He is very warm and excited to come up ideas with you. Our ideas were not structured, which can be frustrated, and Hugh thought that was a fun challenge. We hear it all the time, but people love everything Hugh designed for us. He is a lovely person, fun to be around, and wonderful to work with.

- Jenna Friedman // Co-owner // Baharat

Having a strong, well-realized brand is important. I felt I needed something that would stand out. Working with Hugh, we talked about the company, the business, and how my product and business has played into my own life and he incorporated all of that. He nailed who and what we are. Hugh is very talented.

FAQ

  • See Pricing // Timeframe section below

  • Out-of-the-box HMDC work does not come trademarked, but we offer a partnership rate with our lawyers at Drummond Wilson. HMDC clients get a special discounted rate for trademark registration and additional design protection-related services.

  • HMDC’s strengths are based in visual creativity and strategy. Marketing is the creation of strategy to make people do something while branding is meant to strategize making people feel something.

We are firm believers that you should hire people for their strengths. Branding, visual design and strategy is ours. We have many connections with marketing teams, and if it’s marketing you require we can absolutely incorporate that into our services and let the pro’s handle it.

  • Absolutely. Love doing it.

If you’re looking for a new kick-ass mural in your state or country, let us know!

It’s also worth mentioning that wi-fi is a remarkable thing. The majority of our most successful and awarded projects were completed entirely remote. We have clients across the United States as well as Europe, South America, and always looking for more!

  • We keep a sharp eye on industry standards to ensure your investment is in direct correlation with your received deliverables. We love working with clients of all shapes and sizes, and our prices reflect accordingly.

  • Probably the #1 question we get asked. Best answer is to reach out and find out! Consultations are the best way to decide if your business is a good fit for HMDC and when we can plug you into the schedule.

  • Nope. When we hand over your final deliverables, they’re all yours. HMDC prices reflect the investment in the creation of design work, not the usage of it.

a Note from Hugh

After building a career as a freelance graphic designer in Portland, Maine for 10 years, winning over 100 awards in the past 3 years alone, and establishing myself as what the host of The 16oz Canvas Podcast, AJ Kierans called a “staple in the Portland creative Community,” I reached a point where I was ready to take the show on the road. Time to leave the comfortable and familiar, pursue my potential and both a designer and as human in passions and interests I had long subdued. I threw everything into a storage unit, packed my truck with what I could carry and drove west to the Rocky Mountains.

Before I left and even today, I still am bombarded by head-cocked friends, family and colleagues by one slightly un-nerving and (to put it bluntly) annoying question: Why? What the hell are you doing?

The “cocktail party” answer provide them is a true statement: I’m going to move to the American West, buy a horse, and rope a cow. It’s simple, but I knew that if I could achieve this first phase of goals, it meant that my personal and professional goals would be taken care of along the way.

“Move to the American West, buy a horse, and rope a steer.”

So far, that those 3 simple goals took me a lot of places I never could have planned. Meeting countless amazing and unique people, saving bullriders as a bullfighter, driving wild horses, flanking and branding cattle, training damaged horses, sharing sandwiches with horses by a heard of wild bison on the sage brush-covered prairie. All the while posting up in coffee shops, shitty hotel rooms, ranch bunkhouse kitchen counters; wherever I could set up a laptop or crack open a sketchbook. I very quickly realized that I was consistently creating better design and having better ideas than I had the previous day.

It feels like luck and magic most days, but I realized that this was a creative progression. It indicated to me I was heading in the right direction.

As a graphic designer, I am constantly immersed in the world of innovation and creativity. My education and constantly growing experience have equipped me with the technical skills and artistic sensibility needed to create compelling visual narratives. By the day I become more adept at translating complex ideas into visually engaging designs, and I am always eager to push the boundaries of creativity. Owning a horse and learning how to rope, work cattle, handle horses and be a cowboy has taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and authenticity. It has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the simple, yet profound, beauty of nature and the timeless traditions of rich heritage. This experience has grounded me and provided a counterbalance to the fast-paced, digital world of graphic design and running a freelance business.

In my work, I continue strive to merge these worlds, drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the West. I aim to infuse my designs with a sense of authenticity, simplicity, and timeless beauty, reflecting the values and aesthetics of what I would define as a cowboy.

In the words of David Bowie in 1997 at MSG, “"I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise I won't bore you."
